Cleaning, Depots, Remote Assistance and the Cost Numbers
Autonomy removes the driver. It does not remove cleaning, charging, repositioning, insurance, depots or the people who run them.
The robotaxi case is an economic argument wearing an engineering costume. Whether the service works depends less on whether the vehicle can drive itself than on what each mile costs once cleaning, charging, insurance, depot space, remote assistance and utilisation are counted.
These four claims are the operational core: what happens between rides, how vehicles get themselves to where they are needed, what the vehicle costs to build and what a mile costs to serve. Each is quoted as a number and none has been published with its accounting boundary attached.
How to read these claims
A robotaxi programme mixes four kinds of statement: a vehicle design shown at an event, a capability demonstrated in a supervised service area, a company target, and a service a member of the public can actually book today. Tesla's pages change as the fleet, software, service areas and terms change, so every claim below is bounded by what was documented on the access date rather than by what may be true in another city or a later release.

Automated cleaning
Tesla's current rider material does not confirm a deployed automated cleaning system. Treat this as a future fleet concept unless a named facility and equipment are documented.
The list claims depots autonomously vacuum, wipe screens and sanitize vehicles between rides.
Driverless vehicles need inspection and cleaning because spills, trash, biological contamination and damage cannot be delegated to a driver. Automation must first detect what kind of service is needed.
What remains unpublished. Cleaning hardware, inspection sensors, depot locations, sanitation protocol, cycle time, human exception handling and current deployment are unknown.
A fair test. Seed representative trash, spills and damage, then measure detection, cleaning completeness, turnaround, cross-contamination and escalation to human staff.
Self-depot navigation
Automated fleet repositioning is a necessary operating capability, but Tesla's public rider pages do not document the full charging, washing and restocking workflow claimed.
The source says vehicles autonomously route to maintenance depots when charge is low or demand is weak.
Dispatch must balance passenger demand, battery reserve, depot capacity, cleaning state, maintenance faults and deadhead distance. Local autonomy is only one part of that scheduler.
What remains unpublished. Depot network, dispatch rules, charging thresholds, maintenance routing, queue behavior, manual override and current automation level are unpublished.
A fair test. Run full-day fleet simulations and live pilots with depot outages, demand spikes and low-charge vehicles, measuring service level and stranded-vehicle events.
Sub-$30,000 production cost
Tesla has promoted affordability but has not published a Cybercab unit production cost. Manufacturing cost, sale price and fleet capital cost are different numbers.
The source says Cybercab is engineered for a production cost below $30,000.
Removing driver controls and optimizing a purpose-built vehicle can reduce parts and labor, while autonomy compute, redundant systems, charging infrastructure and low initial yield add cost.
What remains unpublished. Bill of materials, conversion cost, factory depreciation, autonomy hardware, warranty reserve, fleet preparation and any external sale price remain unknown.
A fair test. Use audited cost definitions at stable volume and compare total deployed fleet capital per service hour, not an unsupported sticker or component estimate.
Operating cost per mile
Tesla describes low operating costs as a goal but the sub-20-cent figure is not a published audited fleet result in the reviewed sources.
The source claims operating expense below $0.20 per mile and fares below human-driven ride-share.
Cost per mile depends on energy, tires, cleaning, repairs, depreciation, insurance, connectivity, remote support, deadhead movement and utilization. Removing the driver changes the ledger rather than erasing it.
What remains unpublished. Accounting boundary, occupied-mile share, maintenance history, insurance, support labor, depot costs, battery life and mature utilization are unknown.
A fair test. Publish a reconciled fleet ledger for paid and total miles over multiple quarters, including capital recovery, incidents, downtime and human operations.
Pull-over and emergency support
Confirmed with nuance. Tesla provides Pull Over and Support controls; Pull Over seeks a nearby safe location, and customer support can call through the vehicle's microphone and speakers. Robotaxi is not emergency medical transport.
The source says riders can request remote support or an emergency pull-over from the touchscreen or app.
Passenger controls must authenticate a valid request, select a safe stopping place, preserve vehicle control and connect human support without implying that a remote operator drives the car.
What remains unpublished. Response-time targets, staffing, remote capabilities, language routing, total-network-loss behavior and incident escalation are not fully published.
A fair test. Test pull-over placement, repeated inputs, panic, weak networks, screen or phone failure and support escalation with riders unfamiliar with Tesla.

Bottom line
Every fleet business dies in the gap between the cost of a vehicle and the cost of a service. A sub-$30,000 vehicle is a manufacturing claim. A cost per mile is a claim about a whole operation, including the parts autonomy does not remove.
Ask which costs are inside the per-mile figure and which sit outside it, what utilisation it assumes, and what happens to it when a vehicle needs cleaning between every second ride.
